I’d say 3000-4000 is good enough.
Several days ago, when i was asked how Chinese is read/written whether “from left to right, like English, or from right to left, like Japanese and Arabic” like she said, i was astonished of the difference between language systems.
couple of years ago when i was working for a ship service company, some Russian from ship visited us, we have a drink together, some of them asked my boss how many characters does Chinese have. When i said it might be around 3,000 frequently used characters, boss held different opinion. He was my boss any how and has “better”education background, did not argue on it. But as far as i can remember when i was very young, from the small but classic dictionary named “xin hua zi dian”, seems it is more than 3,000 characters.
